Daily Quiz

Q: What is the "Rule of Thirds" and how is it used in the composition of a photograph?
A: The "Rule of Thirds" is a rule based on the golden ratio that states that a image should be divided into 9 equal parts with the most interesting elements placed in either of the four intersections of the horizontal and vertical lines. We can use the rule of thirds in a photograph by referring to the grid when taking a photo.

1) A fast shutter speed will freeze the action allowing you to take sharper photos.
2) A slow shutter speed will allow more light to enter the camera and will make action shots more blurry.

Editorial Photo

For this project I knew I wanted to take the photo outside to convey that the "stressed student" was having to work hard on a beautiful sunny day. However in some of my photos the lighting is a little too bright and some had sun spots in them. If I were to do it again I probably would choose someplace more shady to avoid these mistakes. I do nonetheless really like the background and poses I chose. My model did a great job at portraying a stressed student. Even though I did start out having trouble in the sunlight I did get great photos using the TV mode and forcing the flash. The photo I chose to enhance was taken in this mode and I really like how it turned out.

Angle Portrait

To enhance the portrait I first used the curves option and adjusted it to medium contrast. Because there wasn't that much of a difference I continued to experiment with the curves to create more contrast in my photo. Then I used the soft light tool in the layers pallete and kept the opacity and 100% to make the colors pop. Lastly I added a blue border around the enhanced photo.
